An Inspiring Collaboration of Cakap and YABB:
Connecting the Youth through Education and Technology for a Better Indonesia

Jakarta, July 1, 2020 – The digital transformation that has taken place very quickly in the past year has rapidly changed the way we interact. Cakap, with the online two-way interactive learning system, strives to provide leading learning solutions that are useful through sophisticated information technology.

The Indonesian Internet Service Providers Association (APJII) survey highlighted a significant increase in internet users from 64.8% to 73.7%, equivalent to 196.71 million of the 266.91 million population who are fluent internet users, where the largest user segment is youth/generation Z (15-20 years) and young adults/millennial generation (25-34 years). However, the high penetration of internet usage does not reduce the unemployment rate in Indonesia. According to BPS (Statistics Indonesia), until the end of February 2021, there were 8.75 million unemployed people and 11.45% of whom are SMK/SMK graduates, around 1 million people.

Acknowledging those circumstances, the Indonesia’s pride-and-joy companies in education and ride-hailing, Cakap and Gojek through the YABB Foundation, have dreamed about a program that can help Indonesia’s younger generation to maximize the use of the internet.

Based on this awareness, information technology players hope that there will be a program that can help the younger generation of Indonesia to maximize the use of the internet. One of them is the cooperation program by the nation’s children’s creation company in the field of technology, namely Cakap and the Anak Bangsa Bisa Foundation (YABB), which stands for Gojek to maximize the competence and quality of the younger generation.

Through the ‘English for Engineering’ program from Cakap in the talent development program, GenerasiGigih from YABB. GenerasiGigih targets SMK graduates, new college graduates, and those who are interested in technology from all over Indonesia. The GenerasiGigih program will be divided into 30 class groups with 50 meeting sessions over six months. Registration of participants, which has been open since the end of April, will be filled with several learning sessions, learning programs, and will end at the end of December 2021.

Cecilia Ong, Cakap Vice President of Business Development, notes that this program is in line with Cakap’s vision to elevate people’s lives, because this program seeks to equip the youth with English language skills through the use of technology for building the nation, particularly for opening greater opportunities for Indonesian youth.

“As a technology-based platform, Cakap sees the importance of mastering information and communication technology which will provide wider opportunities to improve one’s quality of life and build the nation’s future. In addition, we also take advantage of this opportunity to be open with YABB to use young people’s internet as technology experts to support the future of Indonesia’s technology industry, “explained Cecilia Ong.

Cecilia added that it is hoped that from 3,000 YABB participants registered, in the next few years, it is hoped that more young people will participate in the technology industry. With the potential and roles that the young people possess, the local’s information technology industries will be increasingly enhanced with innovative products that focus on improving the quality of life of Indonesia’s next generation,” concluded Cecilia Ong.

The high quality of human capital will certainly encourage the birth of highly competitive science and technology products. This will also have a positive impact on Indonesia, along with active efforts to increase the demand for Indonesian talent in the technology sector

With this collaboration, the Chairperson of the Anak Bangsa Bisa Foundation, Monica Oudang also revealed the challenges faced by the digital talent in Indonesia, “The challenge to develop digital talent is increasingly complex, one of which is the communication aspect. Currently, learning resources in the field of technology are still dominated by foreign language references, so talents in Indonesia require special adjustments and abilities to explore the material presented. ”

“YABB believes that the spirit of gotong-royong is the key in facing these challenges, therefore the Generasi Gigih program has been realized. By collaborating with Cakap, we believe #anakbangsa can improve their ability to communicate in English and understand various works of literature, as a provision for them to develop their potential and dreams to become changers,” concluded Monica.

The dream of this program is that the younger generation is not only a user of the results of development programs, but also can play a role in implementing and participating in all aspects of national development by enriching the ability to communicate in foreign languages.
