Building English Literacy Through #CakapUntukBangsa

Cakap Online Class in Kiabu Village

Jakarta, August 19th, 2019 – In 2018, Indonesia was ranked 51th in English proficiency, based on the recent “English Proficiency Index”. The ranking is still behind Singapore, Malaysia, Philippines, and Vietnam. The ability to speak English in Indonesian society will have an impact on the quality of Human Resources (HR). The low awareness about the importance of English in Indonesia occurs due to several factors, including educational inequality in Indonesia.

There are at least three challenges to educational inequality, which is access to education, the quality of education, and the distribution of educational infrastructure. As an archipelago, Indonesia has a problem of information technology services that have not been evenly distributed to border areas. One of the solutions to reduce inequality in providing access to education is to utilize technology for the distribution of literacy.

Therefore, Cakap, as a startup which focuses on education, will continue to commit to creating social impact in Indonesia, by increasing the quality and competitiveness of Indonesia’s human resources to be advanced through online English learning platforms.

Since 2018, Cakap has collaborated with the Bawah Anambas Foundation (BAF) to improve the quality of English education for high school students in Kiabu Village, Anambas Island District. The collaboration was carried out through the Digital English Club program, which provides a digital platform to learn English. The geographical condition and infrastructure of Kiabu Village, which still requires the attention of many parties, enabled Cakap to contribute directly to improve the quality of education, especially English literacy, through the use of technology.

Cakap initiated programs to invite Indonesian citizens, especially Cakap’s users, to participate in #CakapUntukBangsa campaign. People can be directly involved through Cakap in improving the quality of education by providing access and quality materials, especially in English, for remote areas in Indonesia. Every purchase of learning packages in Cakap will automatically be converted into “free English learning sessions” for high school students in Kiabu Village. “One for One” program runs from 17 August 2019 to 28 October 2019.

According to Tomy Yunus, CEO of Cakap, “Indonesians basically care about each other and have a high sense of nationalism. Cakap initiated #CakapUntukBangsa program to invite Cakap application users to contribute directly to the nation and participate in the equal distribution of quality education in Nusantara, especially in improving foreign language skills”. The statement is made during the closing explanation about #CakapUntukBangsa Campaign.
