More Than A Hundred Tourism and Creative Economy Practitioners Have Graduated From Digital English Program Initiated by Cakap and The Ministry of Tourism and Creative Economy (Kemenparekraf/Baparekraf)

Jakarta, August 4 th , 2020 – The Ministry of Tourism and Creative Economy / Tourism and Creative Economy Agency (Kemenparekraf / Baparekraf), through the Deputy for Resources and Institutions, the Directorate of Human Economic Creative Development in collaboration with the educational startup PT Cerdas Digital Nusantara (Cakap.com), in running the program Digital English Course. This program runs from 1 May to 30 July 2020, by facilitating English language skills improvement programs for creative economy players to be able to penetrate the global market.

250 participants were selected out of 2,794 registrants from across Indonesia after taking into accounts several substantial aspects and a joint curation process conducted by Directorate of Creative Economy Human Resource Development and CAKAP; some of whom came from the Super Priority Destinations (DSP) and creative districts / cities.

The highest percentage of participants come from West Java. As many as 20% of participants have a background in the culinary subsector and are the highest percentage of participants, followed by the fashion subsector with 13%, the craft subsector with 12%, and 14% other creative economy subsectors.

The Curriculum Development team from CAKAP crafted the English learning materials that supports 17 creative economy subsectors and developed with a hyper-local content approach that leads to 3 substantial aspects that must be mastered, such as self-introduction in English, product introduction to customers, and conversation buying and selling with customers.

In the learning process, participants are divided into 25 groups based on their English competence after they took the placement test prepared by Cakap. The level of difficulty is divided into Medium-high Beginner and Low Beginner. The significant differences between the two levels are the level of complexity of the vocabulary, the grammar used, and the complexity of learning activities.

Over a span of 3 months, there were 2 mini assignments with product introduction material through voice recording and elevator pitch, one of which presented business person from Norway, Cecilie Been Lied; a Norwegian entrepreneur who has a pearl and souvenir business and NGOs in Lombok, West Nusa Tenggara.

Total of 106 participants who succeeded the program with a minimum attendance of 80% are qualified to get a Certificate of Completion that was officially issued by the Directorate of Human Resource Development in Creative Economy and Competence (PT Cerdas Digital Nusantara).

According to the Head of Sub Directorate of Education II Kemenparekraf / Baparekraf Jemmy Alexander, “In fact this training is not just to get a certificate, but Kemenparekraf / Baparekraf also hopes participants can take knowledge and the best points to be used as business capital in the future.”
